Dear Isolation #9

Our second isolation birthday. We didn’t have the luxury of being able to go for a stroll round a park this time.. oh how we took that for granted.

The day started with yoga (on my request), I’m surprised by my motivation to keep wanting to exercise in the morning but it is definitely a good way to get into a good head space for the day. Another good way to start the day is with homemade gluten free cinnamon buns courtesy of Amy. They’d also decorated the kitchen the night before with 16th balloons lovingly edited to say ’22th’ with black marker.

There was a bit of a theme with my presents.. games. Jack got me ‘pie face’ and one described as a ‘filthy drawing game’ – I’ll let you know if I am brave enough to play that one with the family. He also got one which involves wearing this headpiece which supposedly measures your heart rate and the aim is to ‘stay cool’ while other people do weird things around you to try and make you laugh – we had a few failed attempts at this, maybe Jack doesn’t actually have a heart.

It was a bit chillier yesterday but we decided to brave the wind for a classic game of swing ball. I wonder how many people have lost teeth to swing ball? I forget how terrifying it is, especially when you’re playing against jack who WHACKS it at full pelt. Him and mum had a close game but Jack remained victorious (even playing back handed). Amy and I watched at a safe distance away, it’s a good training exercise for social distancing.

We ordered dinner tonight from a local company called Hogs and Hops, they also managed to find our house which is a small miracle. We ordered a variety of veggie and meat burger and some sexy sides of katsu fries and a Raynor favourite ‘Poutine’. Which is not a Russian Leader but instead a delicious Canadian combination of chips, gravy and cheese curds. Anyone local I would absolutely recommend ordering from them, our bellies and hearts were happy. We are already thinking about ordering from their Sunday Menu…

Jack, mum and Amy have been conversing in a group chat for a while now about birthday plans, plans which have since had to be put on the back burner for obvious reasons. So plan 29402 involved setting up an Escape Room in our living room. Jack found an at home escape room game called ‘Exit the game, The Forgotten Island’ in which you have to solve riddles in order to ‘escape’ from the deserted island. So of course mum and Amy decided we needed appropriate ‘props’. With a white sheet for the sand, a blue sheet for the sea, some wooden fish, a cardboard palm tree and a bunch of bananas, the living room was unrecognisable (not a hint of sarcasm there). The game took a bit of time to get our heads around but we ended up getting very invested, it’s such a clever game. However, we perhaps weren’t as clever and after two hours we still hadn’t ‘escaped’ the island so decided to put it on hold for another day. The game is designed so you can only play it once but if you’re slow like us you can make it last for days. We will keep you updated on whether we actually manage to escape, feels all a bit too real at the moment!
