Thursday was a day for getting stuff done so we could try and make the most of our bank holiday weekend – gotta give ourselves quarantine holidays right?
Jack decided he needed another trip to the outdoor barbers on Thursday aka Megan anxiously going at his hair with the clippers. The clippers however had other ideas and decided to die right in the middle of the hair cut leaving him with a very interesting style – I really appreciated the almost 90-degree angle step that was created as I was trying to cut higher up his head while the clippers died. They took a long time to charge by which point we had lost patience for hair cutting so Jack’s hat was stuck firmly to his head until Friday morning when we sorted it out (sort of).
Mum continued making her face masks, she’s mastered two different styles now. I requested a very grown-up one made out of ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ material. If I’m gonna have to wear a mask, I at least want one that will make me smile. She’s thinking that she might try and make some scrubs next week to donate also, she’s a very clever lady. Amy has carried on with her new knitting skills and has begun making mittens to match her hat – perfect weather for it.
Friday was a much more exciting day as we decided to give our nod to VE day and enjoy the celebrations. Mum, Amy and I dressed up in our best attempt at 40s fashion, each with headbands and victory rolls. I really enjoyed having an opportunity to do my makeup nice and get dressed up, even if it was just for sitting in the garden all day. We didn’t have any union jack bunting so we used some French bunting that we had lying around for when Mum and Dad held a french themed dinner party – holding onto it paid off. We took down Amy’s birthday balloons but left up the red and blue ones, our very half-hearted attempt at decoration. Mum however did decorate her morning porridge with blueberries and strawberries in a union jack pattern, the little things!
Amy of course had to whip up some scones. She made her first batch of sourdough scones which were lovely and light. We ate them with tea from a tea set that had been passed down from our Great Auntie Myrtle, I think she’d have appreciated our use of it. It was a busy day for Amy in the kitchen as she also gave herself the task of making a loaf of bread and sourdough pizzas for dinner – she was exhausted at the end of the day bless her! She’d looked particularly 40s housewife with her apron and victory rolls kneading the bread. The pizzas were again delicious but not DIY this time (so less fun) but we enjoyed eating them in the sunshine with a glass of watermelon gin and lemonade.
Amy and I signed up for a Disney quiz in the evening with the donations going to ‘Coppa Feel’, a charity that raises awareness of breast cancer. It was hosted by actress Carrie Hope Fletcher and we were naively confident, thinking that Jack’s mega Disney quiz the other week would have put us in good stead. We decided to compete but in hindsight we would have been better working together Amy won with 20.5 out of 45 but I wasn’t far off with 18. Here’s some of the questions to get you thinking…
Which is the only dwarf who doesn’t have a beard?
What is the only Disney song in which the villain and the protagonist duet? (clue it’s quite a recent film)
What was Mickey mouse originally supposed to be called?
