Dear Isolation #63 & #64

We have managed to survive the heat these past few days (just) and only escaped with very mild sunburn (go us!).

Wednesday may have been one of my favourite days of lock down. We have been talking about making a slip and slide for a few weeks but never felt it was quite warm enough to warrant getting out the bikinis but we were all desperate for a cool down. The water slide we had growing up has long gone so we had to improvise with a few plastic sheets and the hose pipe. We also inflated a body board with handles which we must have had for over 10 years, there’s photos of sprog Megan and Amy using it in the sea at Bognor. It took us a bit of time to work out the positioning of the slide, it had to be at an angle to avoid flying off onto the grass and receiving some not so nice grass burns but after a bit we had it cracked. The body board was fun but if you got the best speed if you just flung yourself on to it, Jack hilariously flopped down like a fish every time. Less hilariously he would come shooting down just as I’d reached the bottom, quick reactions were required.

We had ‘Summer BBQ’ playlist on in the background which features bops like ‘Good Vibrations’ and ‘Message to you Rudy’ and were three very happy big kids.

Jack’s dad and brother have been working locally on a friends house so popped round for a socially distanced hello on their way back, Jack hasn’t been able to see them since February so I think appreciated it a lot. Felt weird that we couldn’t invite them in!

I opted out of the workout on Thursday and chose some Yoga instead as I cannot hack the heat. The maniacs that are mum and Amy decided however to endure a 30 minute cardio workout. Amy had to do the stretches outside because she was so hot. What has become of them??

I’ve been getting into birthday planning mode again with Jack’s birthday just round the corner. I think I am more excited for his birthday than I was my own, my kids are gonna have the most epic birthday parties. I’ve been writing a Harry Potter Quiz, which for someone who has only watched and listened to the first book/film it’s a bit of a challenge but I’m getting there. On that note, Jack and I completed the first Harry Potter audio book which is an impressive 6 hours and 18 minutes. Jack get’s annoyed that I can’t last a whole chapter before wanting to go to bed but we got there eventually. Only 6 more to go…

Amy made another lemon sourdough cake yesterday but we have been victims of the great icing sugar shortage of 2020. We went on a hunt for some, by we I mean mum did all the hard work and Amy and I just went for the ride. (Side note: It was unbelievably busy out, which is not the most settling!). She went to two places but couldn’t find any so we called up Betty Crocker and she helped us out. Amy melted some of the vanilla butter cream and put it on the cake, which was as good as it sounds. Jack overheard our icing debarkle and came out with ‘I think I have some Icing Sugar’ before wandering over to where his science equipment is kept. If anyone isn’t aware, one of Jack’s freelance job’s is running science parties and workshops. He then appears with an unopened box of icing sugar (at some parties they make sherbert) – he does surprise us. We considered selling it on Amazon for a hefty profit but decided that our baking was more important.

Jack was in charge of the family quiz this week. He’d been teasing at some not very PG rounds so we were grateful with what we got. There was a social media round where he scrolled through the dark depths of Facebook and found some embarrassing things that we had all posted and/or been tagged in and the point went to guessing who posted it. He also wrote a Jack round, as revenge for all the rounds on family members that he had been at a disadvantage for. Proud to say I smashed that one (and rightly so!). We also had a recipe round, to see how many ingredients we could name from a dish and a cocktail round – guessing what cocktail the ingredients he listed made. The final round was a ‘find me round’ where we had to quickly grab and find something of a certain colour or beginning with a certain letter and show it to the camera – this got very competitive, no surprise there. Jack is turning out to be a very good quiz master, he’ll be charging high rates soon.
