Dear Isolation #95, #96 & #97

Monday was very… mondayish as a whole.

Amy had the mission of unpacking or at least storing all of the stuff she brought back from her uni room. She’s (hopefully) moving into her new house in July so doesn’t want to unpack too much as she’ll be hauling it back up north before we know it.

I met my pal Lizzie for a few hours and we took a walk around the country park. It was lovely to have a catch up in the sunshine although I did make a rooky error and wore converse meaning my feet were not my friend after the 2 hour walk.

Jack started an online course which is happening every Monday for 4 weeks, what that course consists of, even he couldn’t really tell you. It’s about ‘true storytelling’ and how this links in with business, I get the gist it’s about being true to yourself so you can carve out the story you want in life – something very profound like that. Apparently whenever they spoke they had to hold an imaginary talking stick and if you complete the course (which takes a lot of time and a lot of money – he’s doing a free trial currently) you get your own talking stick with an animal of choice carved into the top. I might have to just make him one.

Tuesday I was feeling a bit low so Jack took me for a drive for a change of scenery. We went via Starbucks of course for an iced coffee and took them to Delapre Abbey in Northampton. It was too hot to go on a proper walk but we enjoyed sitting in the gardens and having a little potter around the grounds – the change of scenery definitely worked wonders. We got back in time to watch an online Zoom Q&A with Rob Brydon. I am a big Gavin and Stacey fan so enjoyed listening to his interesting and funny stories in his lovely welsh accent.

The car had to go in for a service yesterday so I kept mum company while we had to kill 2 hours. We braved the shops (with masks) as this was the only thing near by. It’s not the most inspiring retail park at Riverside and less enjoyable when you don’t feel like you can touch/smell anything or dawdle. We enjoyed pets at home the most. They didn’t have any of their small animals for sale but we did see a few pets who’d been brought on the shopping trips including a gorgeous and very large rabbit on a lead! There was also a rather large corgi (my favourite) who was very intrigued by the rabbit – as were we.

We’d planned to have a coffee to break up the not so enjoyable browsing but the Costa wasn’t open till the day after – typical! So we decided to take our boots meal deal and sit under a tree. We saw lots of people walking in one direction with picnics so we decided to follow to see where the path ended up. We ended up losing any sight of other humans but did find a pleasant little walk by the river. There was a very funny moment where we just approached a covered area of trees and hiding underneath it were a herd of cows, which just seemed to appeared out of nowhere. I did a bit of an over dramatic gasp and jump backwards but the cows weren’t fussed by us at all – they just wanted some shade.

Over the past three days we have been watching ‘Small Island’ the most recent NT Live. It’s based on a novel by Andrea Levy and explores three intertwining stories of three individuals and their experiences directly or indirectly with the War and ‘The Windrush’ generation. It was a really beautiful example of storytelling and very eye opening – I also learnt a lot from watching it about the events that unfolded.
